"May Morris, William's youngest daughter, was an inventive designer and maker. She learnt the art of embroidery from her parents and in 1885, aged 23, became head of Morris & Co's embroidery department.

She practised free-hand surface stitching and her work was widely exhibited.

May helped to transform embroidery from a domestic pastime into a serious art form.

She published a beginners guide in 1893 and later taught in London, Birmingham and Leicester. Dismayed by the lack of professional art organisations willing to admit women, she founded the Women's Guild of Arts in 1907."
