‘Return to the Sea: Saltworks’
Motoi Yamamoto, 2012.
Japanese artist
Installation artwork made out of salt, in honour of his sister who died at 24 of brain cancer.
400lbs – 7 tons of table salt, arranged in patterns resembling lace, sea foam or blood vessels.
At the end of every exhibition, Yamamoto invites people to scoop handfuls of the salt and return it to the sea.
The whole artistic process has helped heal his grief he says, ‘It’s rebirth. It’s about connecting the people and the ocean and continuing the process of healing.’
This makes me think of ashes being scattered at sea.
Cyclical.
The process of creating the salt patterns looks therapeutic.
